Goal Setting Principle- Why You Should Not Set Unexamined Goals

Goal setting is powerful. It can get you to where you want to go. Most success formulas suggest that you formulate your goals in order to get where you want to be. They ask you to dream of that dream car, house, boat, lifestyle. They tell you to ask yourself what you want then set your goals in order to get what you want. But it seems there is something missing.  All the goal setting software and plans will not work if the goals are unexamined, in the larger context.

"Everything you do, is triggered by the emotion of either desire or fear." Brian Tracy.

Take an example.  Your goal is to achieve a 6 or 7 figure income per year, starting from nothing. You formulate your short term, medium term and long term goals. You work hard to achieve it. You study. You learn the ropes. You hustle to get to the top in your field, bypassing everyone else.  You have conquered, overcome all odds to get where you want. You become successful in your endeavor. When you finally reach your goal, do you think you would be the happiest person on earth? Do you think you would have reached the pinnacle of success?

However, this process will fail if you have not examined yourself. Your goal setting will only leave you empty. We have to go beyond desire or fear. We have examine our minds. In Vincent M Roazzi in his book The Spirituality of Success mentions that merely to get what you want is doomed for a negative failure program in an unexamined mind. It feeds into the untamed ego, and will keep you from what you truly want. It has its roots in the desires and ego.

What then is the key to successful goal setting?

"It is not what we get. But who we become, what we contribute… that gives meaning to our lives." Anthony Robbins

"Successful people are always looking for opportunities to help others. Unsuccessful people are always asking, "What's in it for me?"" Brian Tracy

Goal setting has to have a higher objective than mere self subservience, feeding to the wants of the self, unexamined. The key is to not base your objectives, goals and desires on your ego or self centeredness. For unless you conquer your ego and gain power over it, it has power over you. A fear based ego will produce fear based desires and anything that has its roots in fear will have power over you. Rather , have an objective that includes others, and not only yourself.

Detach yourself. Solve problems. Include others in your grand plans. Discover your objectives, reasons, talents and  values. Discover how you can give. Help others. Find your reason, your values, your why and the how will come.

First, discover what you truly treasure and value.

Then base your goal setting on your deepest values and meaning.

And what you can give, contribute and achieve in the process.

The key is to achieve congruence.

Then goal setting will have been done in its proper context and would have served its purpose.

It will not leave you empty, soulless.

But it would have given you true satisfaction.
