Relationships- You Made Me Feel. The Story of the Monk and the Warlord
"You made me feel hurt!!"
" You made me angry!"
"You made me feel guilty."
" You made me happy."
Is it really true?
That someone can make you feel what you feel?
This story of a warlord and a monk illustrates a point….
A warlord once captured a town where there were many monks.
The warlord had a reputation for torturing and killing monks, so all the monks fled into the mountains as the warlord approached.
One monk, however, did not flee. He meditated in the monastery temple. The warlord was enraged to hear this and marched straight to the monastery and into the temple.
He ordered the monk to come out of his meditation and stand up. The monk opened his eyes and stood up, and the two men faced each other. The warlord pulled his sword and his scabbard and touched the tip of it to the monk's stomach.
" Don't you know who I am? " he sneered. " I could run my sword though your stomach without blinking an eye."
The monk looked back at him, his face serene.
" Don't you know who I am? " he said. " I could have you sword run through my stomach without blinking an eye."
The fact of the matter is- Nobody makes anyone feel anything.
They can cause you to tend to feel a certain way.
But ultimately, you are in charge of your emotions.
You have ultimate control.
It can be argued, however, in relationships where people are emotionally close to another, it is true.
That one small action can make the other feel.
Pain, sorrow, happiness, rejection, abandonment, hurt, joy.
One word, one gesture- can cause an intense emotional reaction.
It is part and parcel of close relationships.
Yet, we are ultimately in control.
We cannot blame or shift the control of our feelings to the other person.
Be aware.
Of how we feel.
Of how we cause another to feel.
You have the ultimate control over your emotions.
They are yours.
Use it well.
