How to Add Adventure Into Your Everyday Life
" Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. Security is an illusion." Helen Keller
Life is an adventure to be savored. Enjoyed. Lived. Yet many of us go through the motions of life, barely living, feeling, challenging, growing and daring as we ought to. We have somehow lost the essence, the thrill of living. To relive the adventure in everyday life, the joy and excitement of living again, here are some tips that will start you on a journey you will never regret.
1. Change your perspective.
Realize that the whole of life is an adventure. Simply by being human, by being alive, by being able to feel, experience, victory, defeat, joy, sorrow. Experience growth, risk-taking, re-creation, challenges, experimentation, success and failure. Embrace your adventure. It is unique to yourself.
2. Dig deep within and follow your dreams.
Be inspired by some great purpose, or be motivated by some injustice. It has been labeled positive dissatisfaction. The stirring of your deepest self. You were meant to hunger for something more. Go for this. Do not go for the temporary replacements, the cheap thrill, the substitutes, the amusement park ride, the one night stand that lasts for a moment, and vanishes. Be inspired by something great, lasting, worthwhile.
" When you are inspired by some great purpose, some extraordinary project, all your thoughts break their bounds. Your mind transcends limitations, your consciousness expands in every direction, and you find yourself in a new, great and wonderful world. Dormant forces, faculties… become alive, and you discover yourself to be a greater person by far than you ever dreamed yourself to be."
Step out of your comfort zone. Go into the unknown.
When you step out. You will find there is ground beneath your feet after all.
3. Open your heart.
Feel. Experience.Feel outside of yourself, your world, your family , your friends, your world. Emotions are there to help us experience and connect- with feelings of elation, thrill, happiness, joy, empathy. Emotions heighten and validate the experience. They also warn from danger and compel to right action. When you learn to recognize and validate your emotional life and look inside, you open your heart. But to love is to risk hurt, rejection. Being open to emotions involves a risk. To love is to risk hurt. To live is to risk death. To have an adventure is to risk falling. Yet if we do not feel, we do not live. We would have died inside.
4. Fulfill your divine dissatisfaction.
Seek the truth within. There is often a void that we feel and we tend to fill it with activity after activity. With possessions. With relationships. With a job. With amassing money, food, addictions, cravings. There is deep within, a longing to be united with all that is good, to be loved, accepted, to unite with God. To live with a higher vision. Seek the divine.
" Man is characterized by a hunger for the infinite, for an eternity of life, love and joy." Alan Watts
5. Take action and follow through.
Follow your heart's calling. Take the cue. Your way to enter into the adventure may come to you after in a significant event that is an eye opener, a problem you face that prompts you to take action, or a dissatisfaction you feel, a longing that there is something more in life than what you have right now. But you must take the step to follow through with that vision. The experience and the feeling must end there. The motivation to want more, to create a better life, either for oneself or for others, must begin with action. The first step.
This term, coined by Jim Collins in Good to Great, denotes desires we find so impossible we would not even say them. Your BHAG compels you to take risks you wouldn't have taken, develop new skills, make new friends. Choosing the impossible forces you to stretch yourself. Towards the life of your dreams. You may not reach it what you have proclaimed, but you have tried. And respected yourself, and been the wiser for it. It is part of the adventure in living.
7. Play.
Work is play. To play is to be fully alive in the present moment. Being in the flow, enjoying yourself, will encourage you to grow. When you are at play, you are curious and open to new possibilities. The adventure begins when you are constructively creating, playing, yet committing to that bigger picture you have in mind. And enjoying yourself in the process.
Life is after all an adventure.
Add adventure to your life.
Live fully, acknowledge fully, feel, be, do and have.
Abundantly.
Enjoy the journey and your adventure.
